FIREFIGHTER EXAM NOTICE

THE JOB
The work is of a hazardous nature, that involves the responsibility for firefighting and prevention, salvage and rescue operations and requires mental acuity and physical stamina in the performance of the duties. The incumbent performs firefighting and prevention duties under the direct supervision of superior officers, while routine maintenance and custodial work on the station house and equipment is performed under general supervision and inspected upon completion

RESIDENCE:

Candidates must be legal residents of Westchester County for at least three (3) months immediately proceeding the date of the written examination and continuously up to and including the date of appointment.
PREFERENCE IN APPOINTMENT WILL BE GIVEN TO SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WHO HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF YONKERS FOR AT LEAST THREE (3) MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION AND CONTINUOUSLY UP TO AND INCLUDING THE DATE OF APPOINTMENT.

AGE:

Candidates must be at least 17 years and 6 months of age by the date of the written exam in order to participate in the exam. Applicants who lack one (1) month or less of the minimum age requirement shall be deemed eligible if otherwise qualified. At the time of appointment, candidates must be at least 18 years of age.

PROOF OF AGE:

Candidate must submit at the time of filing:

A Birth Certificate with a raised seal;
OR
A certified copy of a Birth Certificate with a raised seal;
OR
Other evidence of age satisfactory to the Commission (Driver's license, passport, legal document).

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE:

At time of appointment, a candidate must have obtained:

Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma, United States Armed Forces General Education Certification or a diploma, degree, certification or other academic credentials equal to a high school education that is accepted by the New York State Department of Education; or
Completion of twenty-four credit hours of college level courses (including fire science courses), accredited by the New York State Department of Education, provided that the applicant obtains from the New York State Department of Education a high school equivalency diploma prior to appointment; or
Two (2) years of satisfactory experience as a full-time paid firefighter or fire officer in a municipality other than Yonkers, or a comparable full-time paid position as a firefighter or fire officer in the United States Armed Forces, Coast Guard, or civilian employment with the United States Government, provided that the applicant has remained in good standing up to and including the date of termination; or
An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) through (C).
